Who would have ever thought Pat McCain would become a writer? Certainly not Pat! I grew up in a 'reading' home. We all read. My mother often had to take my book away and drag me out of my room to go out for fresh air and exercise. So, I guess she reached her objective; I still love to read and I love the out-of-doors.

One of my interests in addition to writing is genealogy. For many years, I have hunted for various ancestors and have been fortunate to have several cousins who share my interest. My biggest find was our grandfather McCain. He had left Leadville, Colorado in about 1909 and never (as far as we know) been heard of again. I had spent quite a few years looking for him with the help of my daughter, who found a few clues. I was ready to throw in the towel when one night, I keyed in his name on Ancestry.com for a general search. The 1930 census had just been added and guess what? The old Scot had been living in the Pacific Northwest. Before the search was over, a few months later, I knew that he had died in Tacoma, Washington in 1950, where he was buried, and that he had a brother listed as sole survivor!! That would have made my father feel good! Maybe someday, I'll track down the rest of this foot loose family.
